What is Bulimia?

The term bulimia is a derivative of the Latin būlīmia which in turn originated from the Greek word boulimia meaning ravenous hunger. It was Gerald Russell, an English psychiatrist who first described the condition as bulimia nervosa. Bulimia is essentially a form of eating disorder that is characterized by restricting food intake for a short period followed by a phase of binge eating often resulting in feelings of low levels of self-esteem and guilt.
